Lunchbox Theatre Calgary – Shows, Tickets, and What to Know Before You Go
September 15, 1975. That’s the date of the first Lunchbox Theatre performance in Calgary. It sold out. Fifty years later, the company is still doing noon shows downtown – one-act plays that run about an hour, performed for people on their lunch break. The format hasn’t changed much. The address has. But the Calgary Lunchbox Theatre routine, noon curtain, one act, bring your own sandwich, is the same as it was in 1975.
Lunchbox Theatre is the longest-running lunchtime theatre company in the world. That’s not marketing copy, no one else has been doing this continuously since the mid-seventies. They’ve premiered over 60 Canadian works. One-act plays written at Lunchbox are now produced internationally. And they still let you eat your sandwich during the show.

Where Lunchbox Theatre Performs Now
The company doesn’t have its own building anymore. They did, for decades – first in Bow Valley Square starting in 1975, then at a space in the Calgary Tower Centre from 2008. That second venue seated up to 110 people, depending on how they configured the stage. When COVID hit in March 2020, Lunchbox cancelled its remaining season and never reopened those doors.
Since 2021, performances happen at the Studio at Vertigo Theatre, at the base of the Calgary Tower. The address is #161, 115 – 9 Ave SE. It’s literally across the hall from where they used to be. Doors open 30 minutes before the show.
If you’re driving, the Palliser Parkade is attached to the building and has the easiest access for anyone with mobility needs. The Werklund Centre (formerly known as Arts Commons) parkade off MacLeod Trail is another option. On-street parking along 9th Avenue exists but fills up when other events are happening nearby.
What to Expect When You Go
Shows start at noon on weekdays. That’s the core format. But there are also Friday and Saturday evening performances at 7pm, Saturday matinees at 4pm, and Sunday afternoon shows at 1:30pm. Curtain time is curtain time – they start on schedule because the audience has to get back to work.
Running time is usually between 50 and 75 minutes, depending on the production. No intermission. You can bring your lunch and eat it during the show. They offer free tea and coffee at weekday noon performances. The bar opens before evening and weekend shows for drinks and snacks, but they don’t sell food.
“Lunchbox Theatre nurtures new works from the Maritimes to Victoria – a national treasure.” — Louis Hobson, Calgary Sun
One thing worth knowing: Lunchbox runs a scent-sensitivity policy. They ask you to skip the perfume, cologne, aftershave, scented lotions. It’s printed on every show page, so they mean it.
Select performances include ASL interpretation, audio description for blind or low-vision patrons, and relaxed performances. Lunchbox partners with Inside Out Theatre on accessibility. Wheelchair-accessible seating is available – call the box office at 403-221-3708 ahead of time to arrange it.
Lunchbox Theatre Tickets and Prices

For the 2025/26 season (their 51st), single ticket prices are $35 for adults, $27 for seniors over 60 and students, and $25 for previews. A processing fee gets added on top. Group bookings of 10 or more bring the price down to $25 per ticket.
The better deal is the PlayPass: four tickets for $106 (adult) or $98 (senior/student). A PlayPass works like credit on your account. You can use all four tickets on one show, spread them across the season, or bring three friends to the holiday production. Your call. Unused tickets at the end of the season get converted into a tax-deductible donation.
There’s also a Legacy Ticket, $19.75, a nod to the founding year. It’s available on the first Sunday afternoon performance of each production. That’s a specific date per show, not a standing offer. Check the Lunchbox Theatre website for which Sunday it applies to.
You can buy tickets online, by phone at 403-221-3708, or at the box office window. Online sales close 60 minutes before showtime, but phone and walk-up stay open. The box office is managed by Vertigo Theatre, so the email for booking questions is [email protected]. That’s not a mistake. It’s their setup.
The 2025/26 Season
Bronwyn Steinberg is the current Artistic Director. Patti Neice runs the admin side as Executive Director. The company produces four or five mainstage one-act plays per season, plus the Stage One Festival of New Canadian Work – a development program where new scripts get public readings.
The 2025/26 lineup:
Beyond the Sea by Kristen Da Silva (October 14 – November 2, 2025) – a romantic comedy about two strangers on a pier. Directed by Steinberg. 68 minutes.
Ridge by Brendan McLeod, performed by The Fugitives (November 5–16, 2025) – a Remembrance Day show mixing live music with stories from Vimy Ridge. Veterans and active military see it free.
How Patty and Joanne Won High Gold at the Grand Christmas Cup Winter Dance Competition by Trevor Schmidt (November 25 – December 21, 2025) – a holiday buddy comedy. With tap dancing. Some Saturday shows had a tap class afterward.
Ribstone by Christopher Hunt (January 21–25, 2026) – a one-week run. Storytelling with banjo, about ranching roots and southern Alberta. The closing show was followed by a square dance.
Thank You for Your Order by Jessica Moss (March 17 – April 4, 2026) – a comedy about a fulfillment centre worker who falls in love with a customer based on his order. Currently running.
That’s five productions. Most Lunchbox Theatre shows run three weeks. Ribstone was the exception at one week. Every show includes a talkback: actors come back on stage to answer questions, usually on Thursday noons.
“The most successful lunchtime theatre in the world. The very first performance sold out every seat.” — Bartley and Margaret Bard, founders
How Lunchbox Compares to Other Calgary Theatres
Among Calgary theatre venues, Lunchbox is not trying to compete with Theatre Calgary. Theatre Calgary has the Max Bell Theatre at Werklund Centre – 750 seats, big-budget musicals, a Christmas Carol every year. Lunchbox has a borrowed studio space and one-act comedies performed over sandwiches. The comparison doesn’t make sense, and Lunchbox doesn’t pretend it does.
Where Lunchbox fits: it’s the entry point to Calgary live theatre. The noon format pulls in people who’ve never been to a play. The prices are low. The commitment is an hour. You walk in a skeptic, you walk out texting someone about it. That’s the theory, anyway, and 4.7 stars across 134 Google reviews suggests it works more often than not.
